The North Pacific International Chapter of AFS announces student opportunities for the 2008 Annual General Meeting!
NPIC-AFS is dedicated to ensuring that as many students as possible can attend the 2008 Annual General Meeting in Bellingham. Increased student attendance will strengthen the chapter by improving the breadth and quality of presentations and accelerating the formation of AFS student sub-units. Information on the benefits of forming a sub-unit and details on how to get started will also be provided at the 2008 meeting.
Four types of awards and registration waivers are being offered in 2008 to facilitate student attendance:
- Registration waiver for student presenters - Do you remember everything you learned at Toastmasters? Free registration will be provided to a number of students presenting talks or posters at the Annual General Meeting. To qualify for an oral presentation waiver, students must present at least one season of data and be accepted by the Program Committee (posters may be about planned as well as completed projects). Please submit your abstract as soon as possible, but before the January 30th deadline. The presentation waivers will be distributed to the first 11 presenters who submit acceptable abstracts.
- Registration waiver for student volunteers - Get your fingers ready for stuffing some envelopes or handing out laser pointers. Students who do not have a presentation waiver but commit to volunteering 8-10 hours of their time to preparations for or running the conference will receive free registration. The Program Committee will do their best to ensure that student volunteer tasks are well-defined, fairly distributed, and that students have time to attend some sessions of their interest. Contact Julie Henning to volunteer.
- Best student talk and poster awards - Get your PowerPoint and graphic design skills polished up, because $250 and an award certificate will be given to the student presenting the best talk and the one presenting the best poster of the Annual General Meeting. Talks and posters will be judged by a volunteer, non-student panel.
- Student Discount Registration - All other students attending the meeting, who do not qualify for a presentation or volunteer registration waiver, will be offered a significantly discounted registration fee.
All students should register for the conference. If you have been granted a student registration waiver, select “pay by check” at the end of the on-line registration form.
