Washington-British Columbia Chapter Represented at AFS Annual General Meeting

AFS 2011 Program Chair Craig Busack, (WA Dept of Fish and Wildlife) and Chapter President Larry Dominguez attended the Parent Society Meeting August 18-21 along with several other Washington –British Columbia members.  It was an opportunity for Craig and Larry to begin scoping the needs and processes for our 2011 meeting and see some great work going on in other parts of the country.  There were close to 1700 attendants, which is less than expected for 2011.  Apparently, many folks had to cancel from around the country due to hiring freezes and other economic reasons.

‘Fisheries in Flux’ was the theme and keynote speakers addressed issues of change.  The Meeting included a myriad of topics with as many as 16 concurrent sessions at a time.  For example, WA-BC chapter member Kurt Fresh moderated a Marine Science Symposium on the final day to wrap up an informative meeting.

The Chapter will be sponsoring students to attend future Annual General Meetings, so get hooked up with student groups.  You don’t want to miss next year’s event in Nashville, TN.  The Conference organizers are doing an excellent job.  Nashville might also be a great location to combine an AFS conference with a family vacation.
