President’s Message
The Washington – British Columbia Chapter ([NPIC] serving Washington and British
Columbia) is reinvigorated and looking forward to becoming a prominent facet of
your professional life. The chapter has not been overly active for the past
couple of years and that changed on June 6 -8 during the General Annual Meeting
in Tacoma. The meeting was a success and brought many environmental
professionals together to share their work, concerns, and successes.
During the Annual General Meeting two significant decisions were made which will pave the
way to a stronger NPIC. First, WA-BC Chapter members approved $5 annual chapter dues.
Dues will encourage AFS members in Washington and British Columbia to register
as WA-BC Chapter members and supply a modest income to improve student involvement.
Secondly, to encourage involvement the membership approved a lifetime AFS
membership (Worth $1,500) to WA-BC Chapter Executive Committee (EXCOM) members who are
elected to Vice President and ascend through the ranks to Past President over a
four-year period, beginning with the 2008 election.
This chapter will only succeed if you are involved. It is the members who are WA-BC Chapter - not the EXCOM. The
EXCOM is active only to organize the direction given by the members. Be an
active member. An active membership takes little effort. Write a couple of
emails, attend a conference call or two, volunteer for a committee. Go to
student – professional socials, present your work, go to evening mixers, have
fun. That is the activity of an active member. I bet you are doing many of these
activities already. Focus some of this energy towards NPIC. Planning will begin
in the next month for the winter 2008 WA-BC Chapter Annual General Meeting. Please get
involved. Call any of the officers identified in the Newsletter and let’s
continue having fun.
Good Day.
Keith Underwood
WA-BC Chapter President
